Summer Lane Exchange emerged from our experience raising our three daughters—now young adults who remain our proudest accomplishment and greatest joy. While the journey was filled with happiness and exhilaration, it also came with its fair share of hectic and harrowing moments.
Our girls sampled a variety of activities —soccer, dance, swimming, gymnastics, and horseback riding. They enjoyed day trips to the beach, summer camps, and sleepovers with friends. To keep up with their ever-changing schedules, my husband and I became packing pros, with bags lined up in the hallway meticulously packed and organized for their activities each week. As our girls grew older and more responsible, they took over managing their own bags, using packing lists placed on index cards as their trusty guides. This system eventually inspired us to create tote bags with packing lists printed right on them—because if we were going to over-organize, we might as well do it in style.
Our eldest daughter was feeling homesick during her first year of college. Her grandmother sent her a comforting message quoting Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch: “‘When you feel homesick,’ he said, ‘just look up. Because the moon is the same wherever you go.’” This message sparked the idea for ‘Motivational Monday.’
As each daughter graduated from high school and left college, she joined an exclusive group chat created by their grandmother. Every Monday, she shares a motivational quote which aims to inspire self-love, mindfulness, kindness and the occasional high-five. The chat now includes all three daughters, their grandmother, and me. We eagerly anticipate our weekly dose of motivation, which often provides a much-needed boost of confidence and reassurance as our daughters navigate their lives beyond college.
We believe that you, too, deserve a bit of empowerment, a good dose of humor, and a tote bag that simplifies packing, giving you the headspace to embrace your motivation.
